Two crowds arriving in different states

Exclusive-use house weddings produce a guest list that is warm in the middle and cold at the edges, and the gap is much bigger than people expect. Three days of shared breakfasts does something to a group. The residents already have running jokes. They know where the ice is. They will dance at nine o'clock if you let them.

The day guests have none of that. They have arrived somewhere unfamiliar, they know maybe six people, and for the first two hours they will hold a drink and stand near whoever they came with.

The wrong move is to play to the warm group, because they are the ones giving you visible feedback and it feels like it is working. What actually happens is that the wedding splits: thirty people having a great time and ninety watching them. The right move is the opposite, and it is counterintuitive. Aim the first part of the evening squarely at the people who just arrived, and use the resident group as the engine rather than the audience, because they are the ones who will get up first and make the floor feel safe for everyone else.

Once those two groups merge, usually somewhere in the second hour, a house wedding goes further than a venue wedding ever does. Nobody is catching a coach and everybody is somewhere they have started to think of as theirs.

Planning the technical side in advance

At any private property, as opposed to a purpose-built banqueting venue, the technical arrangements are worth confirming at the planning stage rather than on the day. That means establishing the power available for the production side, agreeing where everything will be positioned, and coordinating with the caterer and any lighting supplier so that the load is shared sensibly rather than everyone finding the nearest socket.

It is routine work and it takes one conversation. Where the numbers call for it we bring a generator for the production side so that nothing depends on assumptions. Any supplier used to working at private properties will raise this early, and it is a good sign when they do.

Mas Santo is a house rather than a licensed banqueting venue, which changes the legal picture in the same way it does at any villa.

In Catalonia the legal night begins at 23:00, and outdoor amplified music is commonly capped at 23:00 by the municipal ordinance, which explicitly covers private installations, so being on your own land is not an exemption. Noise limits are measured at the façade of the nearest dwelling rather than at the property boundary. And because a private house generally holds no activity licence, there is no licensed closing hour sitting behind it to fall back on.

So the question that decides your night is a geographic one: how far is the nearest permanently occupied house, and is anyone in it? In open Penedès countryside the answer is often reassuring, but it is specific to the property and you can check it yourself on a satellite map in two minutes before you ever ask.

Permissions and permitted hours are decided per property and per municipality and they change. Confirm what applies to your own date with the owner or your planner, in writing.

Several spaces, one dance floor

The property has a lounge, terraces, gardens and a pool area, so guests naturally spread across more than one space through the evening, which is part of the charm of a house wedding.

The one decision worth making early is which single space is the dance floor, and then treating everywhere else as somewhere people can talk. That way the music is present where people are gathered without competing with itself, and the floor has somewhere to build. It is a layout decision rather than a musical one, and it is much easier made in advance than at eleven at night.

Vineyards, and the sea three kilometres away

Mas Santo sits in an unusual spot. It is genuinely in the Penedès, surrounded by wine country, and it is also close enough to Sitges and the coast that guests not staying on site have real options and a Friday arrival through Barcelona airport is easy.

For a wedding weekend that combination is worth more than either thing alone. The resident group gets countryside and a pool for three days. The day guests get a short drive rather than an expedition. And the couple gets the setting without the logistics penalty that usually comes with it.

Who supplies the sound

At a private house, we do. There is no installed system to inherit, so the sound and lighting are specified for the spaces you are actually using and sized to a hundred and twenty people in domestic rooms rather than to a hall. Where you have engaged an AV or production company separately, often through a planner, we work alongside them.

For a multi-day booking it is usually worth one modest outdoor setup that stays in place for the welcome dinner and the pool day, plus a proper system for the wedding night. Those extra days are where house weddings are won, and they are the ones nobody plans until the week before.
