The questions
- How many weddings have you played in the last 12 months? A DJ who has done fewer than 10 is still learning the context. That is fine for a low-key event, not for a 200-person international wedding.
- Can I hear a mix you recorded at a recent wedding? Not a promo mix, an actual wedding recording. That is the only honest representation of what they will deliver.
- Have you played at our venue before? Familiarity with the space matters more than most couples realise.
- How do you typically structure a wedding set? They should have a clear philosophy, not just "I read the room". What does reading the room actually mean to them?
- How do you handle a guest making a request you do not want to play? This tests their people skills as much as their music skills.
- What happens if you are ill or have an emergency on the day? Every professional should have a contingency plan.
- What equipment do you bring, and do you bring backups? Equipment failure at a wedding is rare but catastrophic. Backups matter.
- Will you attend a pre-event briefing call with us? Any DJ who does not want to do this is a red flag.
- Do you have public liability insurance? Many venues require this. Most professional DJs have it. If they do not, walk away.
- What do you need from us to deliver your best set? The answer tells you whether they are passive or actively invested in the result.
