The hotel and its spaces

Hostal de la Gavina stands in S'Agaró, above the bay of Sant Pol on the Costa Brava, and has been one of the landmark hotels of this coast for generations.

For weddings the hotel publishes several distinct spaces. Indoors there is the Salón Mediterráneo, along with Villa d'Este and the restaurant Las Conchas. Outdoors there are the Garbí and Bay Bar terraces and more than two thousand square metres of gardens and terraces, surrounded by pines and looking out over the sea. Civil ceremonies can be held in the gardens, and there is a private church, Nostra Senyora de l'Esperança, a couple of minutes away for religious ceremonies.

The range of spaces is the point. A wedding here can move through the day rather than sit in one room: gardens for the ceremony, a terrace above the bay at golden hour, and an interior room for dinner and the party.

A hotel wedding, and what that gives you

The practical advantage of getting married at a hotel of this kind, and particularly for an international wedding, is that most of your guest list can sleep where the wedding is. Nobody is watching the clock for a taxi, nobody is driving, and the weekend can extend either side of the day itself.

It also means an experienced banqueting team who run weddings regularly, know their own rooms and coordinate with suppliers as a matter of routine. From our side that makes for a straightforward day: there is someone who knows exactly how the building works, and the sensible thing is to plan with them rather than around them.

Timings

The hotel sets its own hours, so it is the only reliable source for your date and worth asking early. What it means in practice on this coast is a familiar and pleasant shape to the day: the gardens and terraces carry the ceremony, the aperitif and often dinner, and an interior room carries the party. The hotel has the spaces for both.

Sound, and who provides it

What is installed varies from room to room, and the hotel can tell you what is in the space you are using. We work either as DJ only on the system that is already there, or with our own sound and lighting where that is what has been arranged. Where a couple has engaged an AV or production company separately, often through a planner, we work alongside them.

The one thing worth settling early rather than late is simply which of those applies, because it is the difference between a DJ arriving with a laptop and a DJ arriving with a van, and it is a five-minute conversation at the planning stage.

Ceremonies, and the church

The hotel offers civil ceremonies in the gardens overlooking the sea, and for a religious ceremony there is the private church of Nostra Senyora de l'Esperança a couple of minutes away.

Where the ceremony is outdoors we bring dedicated sound for it rather than borrowing what is set up for later in the day: coverage placed close to the guests, and wind-protected microphones for the celebrant, the readings and the couple. Where it is in the church, the question is different again and worth agreeing in advance, since a small stone church and an open garden ask for almost opposite things.

Getting there

S'Agaró sits on the Costa Brava in the province of Girona. Girona-Costa Brava airport is the closest, and Barcelona and its airport are roughly an hour and a half by road. For guests flying in from several countries, naming both airports on the invitation is worth doing, since one of them will suit each group better than the other.

How we work here

ELEVN is a small roster based in Spain, and the reason that matters at a hotel wedding is coordination. There is a banqueting team, often a planner, sometimes a separate AV company, and a couple who may be arriving from another country. We invoice in Spain, we speak to the hotel in its own language and we deal with the schedule directly, which takes a layer off the couple. Every DJ on the roster works in English.

We also play alongside live saxophone or percussion for couples who want the evening to lift rather than simply continue, which suits a room with this kind of character.

We do not publish prices, because a DJ-only booking and a fully supplied day are different jobs. Tell us the date and the plan and you get a real number.
